It is approaching a year. I've worked on this site on and off. You might
have noticed a name change along with a few CSS changes. I added some
advertising, but nothing too obtrusive. I hope.
Big changes in the works. I am also looking to trade links with related
sites. Anybody interested? E-mail me
here.

Is anybody actually reading this blog? Anyhow. I hope everybody had a happy
and safe holiday so far.
As I stated before, I am off of work this week and plan on devoting some time
to this site. I am currently writing a CMS type application for me to use
when updating this site. I already wrote some code this morning but I'm
having an overwelming sense that I am re-inventing the wheel here. I think
I'm going to take some time and throw some google dust around to see what I
can find. I plan on getting the RSS feed done sometime today.

This week I was featured on LifeHacker. This drove a good amount of visitors to the
site. (But not nearly as many as digg did!) It seems that I am getting flamed a
little more on LifeHacker than on Digg, but I really don't care. For those who are interested, here
is the article: http://www.lifehacker.com/software/linux/find-linux-equivalents-to-windows-software-222554.php.
I've been busy working on the code and updating the site. I just found out
that I will be off the week between Christmas and New Years and I hope to get
a lot of things done on the site. The new code will allow me update and
admin the site with ease, but ultimately, the HTML will be generated and
simply uploaded to the server. I believe this allows for the greatest
scalability and the growth of the site. In the future and if needed, mirrors
can be made and hosted on a simple shared hosting plan. But thats kind of
dreaming now, isn't it?
As I mentioned earlier I've been flamed a bit on LifeHacker and
Digg. Mostly because of my poor choice of words in
naming this website. "Equivalent" suggests a true 100% equal to a piece of
software. For example, GIMP is not a true equivalent to Photoshop, to the
true definition of the word. A true equivalent would be if Adobe made a Linux
version of Photoshop. In general, I think that visitors are understanding
what this site is about and what I'm trying to do. I don't think its a huge
problem. In hindsight, I should of probably used "alternatives"
or "replacements" or something like. I was looking for a simple name that
people would remember and show that you can do everything on Linux that you
can do on Windows. However, to be fair, I have also registered linuxalt.com (for Linux Alternatives) and pointed it to the site. If
it makes you feel better, please use that domain name instead.
Some of the following are cool links I found in my referrers log:

It's been a cool ride the last few days. The site has survived my first digging
with out an issue. For those who didn't discover this site through digg, the
url is: http://digg.com/linux_unix/Wanna_find_a_linux_equivalent_to_a_windows_app
At the time of this writing its up to 2262 digg's. I think thats good. I
don't see a lot of articles with that high of a count. I'm flattered, really.
I decided to throw this blog up to give updates and records the thoughts of
the future of this site. This site started out as a pet project and never
thought that it would explode like this. I've got a ton of great suggestions
and I think the first one I am going to work on is including an RSS feed.
Problem is, I'm not sure how to implement it. I can do the technical aspects,
but I'm not sure what I should include in the feed itself. I welcome suggestions.
Finally, advertising. A few people e-mailed me and told me that I should
implement non-intrusive ads to this site. I agree with them and it would be
nice get back something in return the time I spend on this site. However, I
think I have a better idea. I am thinking of putting a link to an Amazon
affiliate program. However, instead of putting up those banners and such I
will just have a simple link to a page off the main page explaining that if
you want to support this site go through the link before you buy anything at
Amazon. This with allow supporters to support the site and keep it ad
free for everybody. What do you think?.

I've been Dugged! Thank you all for the great
words both e-mailed to me and left in the comments on digg.com. I was not
expecting this today but I will be replying to most of you who e-mailed me
soon. Keep the submissions and suggestions coming!
